Caboclos, Pretos Velhos, Erês, Baianos, Boiadeiros, Marinheiros, Ciganos, Malandros, Exus, Pombagiras and the Linha do Oriente. Discover the main spiritual working lines of our temple, their purposes, teachings and ways of connecting with them, both inside and outside the terreiro.

Anyone who has been involved in Umbanda for some time will have heard of Caboclos, Pretos Velhos, Erês, Exus, Pombagiras, Baianos or Ciganos. However, there is one question that often arises, both among newcomers and those who have attended a terreiro for years: what exactly is the difference between the Seven Lines of Umbanda and the so-called spiritual working lines?

This is a very common question. To begin understanding the distinction, we first need to recognise that, when we take part in a gira (spiritual gathering), the spiritual guides (or entities) we see manifesting through mediums, offering consultations, guiding visitors and providing spiritual assistance are the representatives of the terreiro’s spiritual working lines.

Behind these manifestations, however, lies a much broader spiritual structure that helps us understand how spiritual work is organised and carried out within Umbanda.

Understanding this distinction is important for anyone wishing to learn more about the spiritual practices carried out within the terreiro, the teachings shared by the guides and the spiritual richness behind each line.

For those who attend TUEG, getting to know these spiritual working lines also means discovering more about the spiritual identity of our temple.

Shall we explore them together?

First of All, What Is the Difference Between the Seven Lines of Umbanda and the Spiritual Working Lines?

In simple terms, the Seven Lines can be understood as great spiritual currents that organise and sustain Umbanda. Each is associated with particular divine principles, forces of nature and areas of spiritual activity.

At TUEG, we work especially with the energies of Oxalá, Ogum, Xangô, Oxóssi, Iemanjá, Oxum and Iansã, representing different expressions of creation, justice, courage, wisdom, compassion, love and transformation.

At the same time, we recognise and honour the importance of Orixás such as Nanã and Obaluaê, whose presence holds a place of profound respect within the Umbanda tradition.

A simple comparison may help.

If we imagine the Seven Lines as great rivers, the spiritual working lines would be the different paths through which their waters flow to reach people.

The Seven Lines represent universal spiritual forces and, within this spiritual hierarchy, stand above the working lines.

Caboclos, Pretos Velhos, Erês, Baianos, Marinheiros, Boiadeiros, Ciganos, Malandros, Exus, Pombagiras and the spiritual workers of the Linha do Oriente are spirits who work within these currents, expressing their teachings in different yet complementary ways.

Therefore, when someone seeking spiritual guidance speaks with a Caboclo or receives a passe (spiritual blessing and energy-cleansing ritual) from a Preto Velho, they are not coming into direct contact with an Orixá.

Instead, they are receiving assistance from spiritual guides who work under particular spiritual vibrations and principles.

These are the guides who come closer to our human experience, speak our language, understand our difficulties and help us translate higher spiritual teachings into practical guidance for everyday life.

Every terreiro has its own characteristics, and not all Umbanda temples work with the same spiritual lines.

With that in mind, let us now explore the spiritual working lines that traditionally manifest during our spiritual gatherings at TUEG.

Caboclos

Caboclos are among the best-known spiritual working lines in Umbanda. Although they are often associated with Indigenous peoples, their spiritual work goes far beyond any single representation. They are spirits connected to ancestral wisdom, the strength of nature and the ability to find direction even during life’s most difficult moments. For this reason, people often seek their guidance for spiritual healing, protection and the opening of new paths.

One interesting characteristic of Caboclos is that they rarely offer ready-made answers. Rather than telling someone exactly what to do, they tend to encourage reflection, courage and responsibility for one’s own choices. During spiritual consultations, their guidance is often firm and straightforward, reminding us that spirituality may illuminate the path, but it is up to each person to take the necessary steps along it.

Spiritual connection tip: Light a white candle in a safe place, offer a prayer of gratitude and ask for the strength to face your challenges with courage and balance. Rather than simply asking for ready-made solutions, ask — and remain open to discovering — which actions are yours to take so that new paths may open before you.

Pretos Velhos

Pretos Velhos represent African ancestors who lived during the period of slavery in Brazil. Their presence conveys warmth, serenity and wisdom. They are highly respected spiritual advisers who frequently offer guidance on emotional, family-related, energetic and faith-related matters.

One particularly striking characteristic of Pretos Velhos is that they are rarely in a hurry. While many people arrive at the terreiro seeking quick answers and immediate solutions, their teachings often take a different approach. Sitting on their wooden stools, speaking slowly and listening attentively, they remind us that not every transformation happens overnight. Their advice often shows us that every difficulty can become an opportunity for learning, maturity and spiritual growth.

Spiritual connection tip: Prepare a cup of coffee slowly and with intention. Before drinking it, offer a simple prayer of gratitude and reflect on a challenge you are currently facing. Pretos Velhos teach us that some answers come when we slow down enough to hear what life is trying to show us.

Erês

Erês represent purity, innocence and joy. Their light-hearted and spontaneous energy transforms environments, renews hope and strengthens family bonds. They are regarded as guardians of childhood and often work with emotional healing, particularly in relation to experiences from the early years of life.

There is a well-known saying within Umbanda that what an Erê does, no other spiritual guide can undo. This expression highlights the strength of this spiritual line, which is sometimes underestimated by those who mistake joy for a lack of depth. Erês show us that light-heartedness can also be a powerful spiritual tool, and that smiling does not mean ignoring life’s problems, but finding the strength to face them.

Spiritual connection tip: Make time for something that reconnects you with your inner child. This might mean listening to music you loved when you were young, playing with your children, watching something that brings back happy memories or simply laughing without feeling guilty. Erês teach us that hope and the ability to find beauty in simple things are also forms of spiritual strength.

Baianos

Baianos are known for their welcoming nature, sense of humour and straightforward manner. Their teachings focus on perseverance, courage and the ability to begin again. They frequently work with the removal of negative spiritual influences, spiritual strengthening and guidance for those going through difficult times.

It is no coincidence that Baianos speak so often about moving forward. This spiritual line carries the memory of those who had to leave behind places, people and familiar certainties to build a new life. Perhaps this is why their advice is so often marked by hope, confidence and the belief that no difficult period lasts forever.

Spiritual connection tip: Light a white candle, offer a prayer of gratitude for your journey so far and reflect on how many times you have had to start again to reach where you are today. Baianos remind us that every new beginning carries the possibility of growth, learning and transformation.

Boiadeiros

Boiadeiros are spirits associated with protection, discipline and the safe guidance of those travelling along life’s paths. They have a strong sense of justice and are frequently called upon to help in situations involving confusion, insecurity or spiritual instability.

An interesting parallel can be found in rural life, where guiding a herd of cattle requires much more than physical strength. It demands attention, patience and the ability to keep the group moving in the right direction without leaving any animal behind. For this reason, Boiadeiros are often associated with organisation, balance and responsibility. Through their spiritual work, they help people bring order to situations that seem chaotic, restoring clarity when everything feels out of place.

Spiritual connection tip: Choose one area of your life that needs more organisation and take one small step towards putting it in order today. It might be tidying part of your home, dealing with something you have been putting off or establishing a healthier routine. Boiadeiros teach us that great journeys are built through small, consistent steps.

Marinheiros

Marinheiros are connected to the energies of water and the sea. They are known for their work with emotional balance, adaptability and the ability to navigate life’s ups and downs. Their spiritual guidance is often particularly meaningful for people experiencing periods of anxiety, instability or emotional distress.

One characteristic that often catches the attention of those encountering this spiritual line for the first time is the way Marinheiros move during spiritual ceremonies. Their steps and gestures may resemble someone trying to maintain their balance aboard a boat on the open sea.

Some people may even mistakenly believe that they manifest as though intoxicated, but the symbolism is quite different. Their swaying movements represent life’s challenges, the emotions that pass through us and the need to keep moving forward even when everything around us feels unstable.

Spiritual connection tip: If possible, spend a few minutes near water, whether by the sea, a river, a lake or simply watching the rain through a window. Use this moment to reflect on what you cannot control and what you do have the power to change. Marinheiros remind us that life flows more smoothly when we learn to navigate with the currents rather than constantly fighting against them.

Ciganos

Ciganos bring an energy associated with prosperity, movement, freedom and abundance. They are spirits connected to ancestral wisdom, intuition and the ability to recognise opportunities where others see only obstacles. There is a reason why the road frequently appears among the symbols associated with Ciganos. For this spiritual line, life is a journey of constant transformation. Their teachings show us that prosperity does not simply mean accumulating material possessions, but also learning, growing, discovering new possibilities and having the courage to move forward when one chapter of life comes to an end.Spiritual connection tip: Light a white candle in a safe place during a moment of gratitude and make a list of three opportunities, achievements or lessons that life has recently brought you. Ciganos teach us that prosperity begins when we learn to recognise the abundance already present around us and keep our hearts open to what is yet to come.

Malandros

Malandros represent intelligence, strategy, adaptability and the ability to navigate difficult situations with resourcefulness. Inspired by familiar figures from the working-class neighborhoods of Brazil, they teach us the importance of finding creative solutions to life’s challenges without compromising our ethics or dignity.

Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of this spiritual line is that Malandros rarely resolve problems through force. Their teachings show us that many situations in life require observation, patience and the ability to recognise opportunities that are not immediately obvious — in other words, a great deal of flexibility and quick thinking!

This is why symbols such as the hat, playing cards and razor frequently appear in their representations, each associated with protection, strategy and discernment.

Spiritual connection tip: Choose a problem that has been occupying your thoughts and try writing down three different possible solutions. Malandros remind us that there is almost always more than one way forward, and that creativity can open doors that force alone never could.

Exus and Pombagiras

Exus and Pombagiras form one of the best-known yet most misunderstood spiritual lines in Umbanda. They are guardians of the paths, responsible for spiritual protection, the removal of harmful spiritual influences and the strengthening of personal autonomy, self-esteem and individual responsibility.

One characteristic that often surprises people is the famous laughter of Exus and Pombagiras. To an outside observer, it may seem simply to be a distinctive feature of spiritual incorporation. Within Umbanda, however, it carries a deeper meaning.

Their laughter represents the ability to face challenges without allowing fear to take control. It is also associated with transforming heavy energies and negative patterns. For this reason, this spiritual line is deeply connected to truth, transformation and the courage to confront what needs to change.

Spiritual connection tip: Stand in front of a mirror and take a few moments to look at yourself. Reflect on which personal boundaries you need to strengthen and which situations no longer serve a positive purpose in your life. Exus and Pombagiras remind us that protecting our own paths also means learning to respect ourselves.

Linha do Oriente

The Linha do Oriente (Line of the Orient) brings together spirits associated with knowledge, healing and spiritual development. Their work is connected to energetic balance, harmonisation and the strengthening of physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Unlike other spiritual lines that often work through symbols more familiar to the public, the Linha do Oriente frequently works through silence, energy and knowledge.

Its spiritual guides remind us that healing does not always take place through major events or interventions. Often, it begins with small adjustments in the way we think, feel and care for ourselves.

Spiritual connection tip: Before going to sleep, take a few minutes to breathe deeply and reflect on your day. What strengthened your energy? What drained it? The Linha do Oriente teaches us that self-awareness is one of the most important paths towards healing and spiritual growth.

Far Beyond the Names

As we become familiar with the different spiritual working lines of Umbanda, it is natural to feel a stronger connection with some than with others. However, they all carry valuable and complementary teachings.

While some teach us about courage, others teach us about patience. Some encourage joy, while others emphasise discipline, balance or transformation.

At TUEG, we understand that each spiritual line represents a different way of welcoming, guiding and assisting those who seek spiritual growth.

Learning about these manifestations means more than simply discovering spiritual entities or religious traditions. It also means understanding values that can transform the way we relate to ourselves, to others and to the world around us.

Perhaps the most important lesson is this: no spiritual line is more important than another.

Each works in different areas of life and spiritual development, offering the kind of assistance needed at different stages of our journey.

There are times when we need the courage of Caboclos. At other moments, we seek the wisdom of Pretos Velhos, the joy of Erês, the protection of Exus and Pombagiras or the balance of Marinheiros.

All work towards the same purpose: helping people grow, learn and evolve spiritually.

If you already attend TUEG, we hope this article has helped deepen your understanding of the spiritual guides who work within our temple.

If you are just beginning to discover Umbanda, we warmly invite you to visit us, take part in a gira (Umbanda spiritual gathering) and experience first-hand the strength, warmth and teachings of these spiritual lines.

After all, however much we may study and learn about them, some experiences can only truly be understood by living them.
